In  God  We  Trust

The Kenyan people: Kenya's population stands at an estimated 30 million people placing 40 major ethnic groups in the country, each having its own distinctive language.  However, the official languages are English and Kiswahili and are  spoken by nearly everyone.  Though from different ethnic backgrounds, Kenyans are generally warm and friendly people, and most of them will go out of their way to make your visit as comfortable as possible.

Religion: The majority of Kenyans consider themselves Christian, while a growing minority are, embracing Islam and African traditional religions.

Climate: Generally Kenya has a warm climate all-year round, although mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially in the highlands.  The Coast is normally warm and very humid.  Remember, Kenya lies on the Equator and so even on cool days you may experience sunburn.

Currency: The Kenyan shilling is sub-divided into 100 cents and normally exchanges at between Kshs. 75-78 to the American dollar. The exchange rate is mainly determined by the international market and prevailing circumstances.

Banking & Forex: In addition to banks and hotels, you may exchange cash and travelers checks at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, your entry and exit point, or in any forex bureau in the city.  Banks are open from 9:00am - 3:00pm on normal working days, plus at least two Saturdays a month, while forex bureaus operate most of the time.

What to pack: Two pairs of comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen lotion, insect repellent, a camera, jacket or sweater, three wash-and-wear outfits, and one church outfit.  Shorts or slacks are best for game parks, but remember that Africans are very modest: pants for men and skirts for women.  Pack lightly and leave your valuables at home.  Rule of thumb: put everything you need into a pile.  Divide this into a big pile and a small pile.  Take the small pile!

Remember to leave plenty of room for souvenirs.  You might consider packing clothing that can be left behind with mission centers for needy Africans; they will appreciate and you will have room for mementos.

Photography: Please be careful when and where you take pictures.  It is illegal to photograph government personnel and buildings, including airports.  Some Kenyans dislike having their picture taken, and those in tourist areas expect to be paid.  If you are not sure, ask your driver.
