Tsavo Kenya Tourist Destination

Duration: 2nights

Located in Voi, Taita district, Tsavo is the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world.  Due to its great size, it is divided into two, Tsavo west and Tsavo east:

Tsavo West

The Tsavo West National Park is all savannah bushes, semi-desert scrubs and acacia woodlands.  It is characterized by rocky ridges and outcrops, isolated hills, volcanic cones and riverine vegetation.

The main attractions of the park are the two waterholes, built by the lodges to more or less guarantee that their guests will be treated to fabulous game viewing.

Chyulu Hills National Park is an extension of Tsavo West National Park.  Volcanic mountain ranges with a mix of volcanic cones and barren lava flows.  Buffalos, zebras, giraffes, Oryx, lions, leopards and many species of birds and plants are at home here. You can take part in activities like horse riding, hiking, camping, archeological or geological safaris with caves to explore.

Tsavo East

Tsavo East has more open savannah famous for its large numbers of elephant, spectacular herds of up to 1000 buffaloes, assortment of wildlife and over 500 bird species.

Among the attractions in Tsavo East National Park:

  • The Yatta Plateau - It is about 290 km long and is one of the worlds longest lava flows.  It runs along the western boundary of the park above the Athi River.
  • Tsavo/Athi Rivers – Athi and Tsavo rivers join to form the Galana River.
  • The Lugard Falls on the Galana river – a series of wild rapids.
  • Aruba dam – besides watching animals visiting the dam for a drink of water, many water birds can be seen around the dam.
  • Mudanda Rock – It is a rock approximately 1.6km long. It acts as a water catchment and supplies a natural dam at its foot.  It offers an excellent vantage point for the hundreds of elephants and other wildlife that come to drink during the dry season.
  • The Rhino sanctuary; Chaimu Lava Floor; Sheitani Lava and Roaring Rocks, a volvanic hill formation with caves and rocks.
